Configuring the Firewall to Allow POP3
You should also configure your Windows Firewall so that it only allows POP3 connections for sites in your local network (not the Internet at large). To do this, follow these steps:
- Configure POP3 and start the service as described in the web pages noted above.
- Login to an account with Windows Administrator privileges.
- In the usual Windows Start menu, right-click "Computer", then click Manage.
- In the resulting window, expand "Services and Applications".
- In the resulting expansion, click "Services".
- In the right-hand part of the window, locate "Microsoft Exchange POP3". Double-click the entry.
- In the "General" tab of the resulting window, make note of the pathname in "Path to Executable". This is the file you want to configure in Windows Firewall.
- Go to the computer’s Windows Control Panel and choose "Windows Firewall".
The rest of the procedure depends on which version of Windows you have. On Windows 7 or later, do the following:
- Click "Allow a program or feature through Windows Firewall".
- Click "Change Settings" (Windows Administrator privileges required).
- Click "Allow another program".
- In the resulting window, click "Browse", and use the resulting window to find the executable file whose name you found in Step 7 above. Click OK to go to the previous window, then click Add. This adds the POP3 program to the list of files allowed through the firewall.
- Click OK to close the Firewall window, and exit all other windows.
On Vista or Windows XP, do the following:
- On Vista, click "Allow a program through Windows Firewall". (On XP, you go straight to the configuration window.)
- In the configuration window, go to the "Exceptions" tab.
- Click "Add Program".
- Click "Browse" and use the resulting window to find the executable file whose name you found in Step 7 above. Click OK. This adds the POP3 program to the list of files allowed through the firewall.
- Click the entry you just added, then click "Change scope".
- Set the scope to "My network (subnet) only".
- Click OK and exit all open windows.
