Creating Custom Text

To define Custom Text, select Administration —> Preferences —> Custom Text from the menu. MainBoss displays a window containing the following:

Note: To use the Captions, Controls, Menus, Reports, or Forms button, you should first click the message file that you want to change. For example, if you want to change the name used for a particular menu in U.S. English, click the entry for the Default message file, then click Menus. MainBoss will open a window where you can specify the new name for the menu.

Making one change often necessitates making other changes. For example, suppose you want to change MainBoss's term "cost center" into "department". Since "cost center" appears in several captions, control labels, menus, and reports, you would have to change all of such occurrences if you wanted all the names to be consistent.

The first time you wish to customize a message, you must use Create Custom to create a custom message file. You only have to do this once; if you want to customize other messages, you can simply do so without using Create Custom again.

To determine which language files you are currently using, select Help —> About from the menu. Your languages are specified in parentheses at the end of the line beginning with the words Messages Version. There may be two or three numbers:

  1. The first number shows your user language setting. This is taken from your Windows Regional Options setting or from the /langid option (if any) on the MainBoss command line.
  2. The second number is the default language ID. This indicates what message file is actually being used. For example, if this number is 0000, it indicates that you are using message file msg0000.txt.
  3. The third number (if any) indicates an override file. For example, if you are using override file ovr0001.txt, the third number shown will be 0001. Note that if you create an override file, its presence will not be shown in the About window until the next time you start MainBoss.
