When you click the Search button in a browser, MainBoss opens a window where you can specify the record you want to find. This window contains the following:
- Search by: These options specify the field that you want to search. Typically, you can select either Code or Description; this means that you either want to search for a particular identification code or for the longer description that is present in most records. With some browsers, you may be offered different choices; for example, when you want to search in the Work Order browser, the search window asks whether you want to search by W/O Number or Subject. Looking at a particular search window, it should be obvious which fields are available for being searched.
- Search Text: The text that you want to find. MainBoss will search for the first record whose appropriate field begins with that string. For example, if you have specified you want to search by Description and if you specify HOT as your "Search Text", MainBoss will find the first record whose "Description" field starts with the string HOT.
- Search: When you have entered your "Search Text", click the Search button and MainBoss will perform the search. You should be able to see the browser window behind the search window; therefore, if MainBoss finds a matching record, you will see the record that MainBoss found.
If MainBoss does not find a matching record, you will see a box informing you that the search was not successful. In this case, you might want to type in a different "Search Text" and then click Search again. This is useful if you aren't quite sure what you're looking for but can narrow it down to a few possibilities.
Important: MainBoss only looks at the beginning of the specified field. For example, if your "Search Text" is HOT, MainBoss will show you the first record where the field begins with HOT; it will not show you records where HOT appears later in the field. Therefore, it will show you a field like
HOT WATER TAP BROKEN
but will not show you
TOO HOT IN OFFICE. |
- Close: Closes the window. The browser will be positioned at the record found by the most recent successful search.
- Cancel: Closes the window. The browser will be positioned at the record that was selected before you began searching. In other words, you click Close if you actually find the record you want, but click Cancel if you just want to go back to where you were.
