PROFILE - the LOGIN profile file.

The file "/_sysfiles/profile" is used by LOGIN for three purposes.

• To check for default command line options. If there is a line in the profile beginning with "LOGIN", LOGIN will normally make use of the specified options whenever someone successfully signs on to the userid.
• To store a record of what news has already been read. This information is maintained solely by LOGIN; there is no need for the user to alter it.
• To grant permission for remote users (i.e. those on other hosts (machines)) to access your account, using lines beginning with the word "REMOTE".

To modify your profile, use a text editor (e.g. FRED) to enter lines of the form

LOGIN option option option...
REMOTE option option option...

in "/_sysfiles/profile". Do not alter any of the other lines in the file or undesirable results may occur.

If the catalog "/_sysfiles" exists and there is no profile, LOGIN will create a profile file in which to keep track of which news items have already been seen.
