_SYSFILES - where we hide the files you don't need to see.

Description:

The system uses a number of files that the typical user seldom if ever works with directly. There were once kept in your catalog immediately under your UMC, but some people were annoyed to see these special files whenever they listed their normal files. It was also very difficult to implement new commands that needed files residing under a user's account; whatever name one came up with, there was always the danger of some innocent user already having a file of that name.

The solution, which has been phased in since March 1982, was to create a catalog named "/_sysfiles" under each user's account. All specially named files needed by system programs have been moved to this catalog.

Supported Files:

The following files may or may not be present under your "/_sysfiles" catalog depending upon your needs and usage of the system.

containing your session initialization ("expl login", "expl exec").
/mail.alias
personal aliases for mail ("expl mail alias")
/mail.box
containing your mail messages ("expl mail").
/profile
containing information about your timesharing habits ("expl login profile").
